Adults - Like Children - Find Comfort in Teddy Bears

People love to look back on their childhood - it truly is a magical, special time of wonder and excitement. Our imaginations ran wild and we could have the best time in the world running around the backyard! No doubt toys play a big part in our childhood, and many adults actually maintain a relationship with their teddy bears - some being more significant than they did when they were kids! These cuddly companions have kept their charm into adulthood for many people, many of whom find such comfort in their childhood toys that the friendship has outlasted real world relationships. What is the reason that we can’t bear to ditch teddy?

It is estimated that around a third of all adults still sleep with their childhood teddy bears, and the average age of their cuddly toy being 27 years old! A comforting, soft toy friend makes sense in a time of short relationships, high divorce rates and stress. In a recent poll of 6,000 adults, the findings went as far to suggest that as much as 25% of men took their teddy bear away with them on business as it reminded them of home, which is quite an astonishing statistic (and one that we’re sure many others would rather not divulge)!

For many people, this may seem to be a relatively high proportion of adults with teddy bears. But to some degree we can all understand the comfort they bring. Studies show that for many of these people, soft toys remind them of home and of being young, plus there’s something about the feeling of cuddling a furry little bear on a cold winter’s night. Human nature craves such feelings of security, peace and comfort, and teddy bears are the triple threat (so to speak) in one cute package.

If you are a non-teddy bear owning adult and wish to rekindle your childhood friendship with a little furry friend, don’t be hesitant. In a recent study by the University of West Scotland, published in the Journal of Adult Development, findings showed that adults who owned teddy bears didn’t show signs of immaturity or of deeper complex issues in a sample of typical adults. The statistics suggest that whilst many people assume that owning a toy animal is an indicator of the owners’ immaturity, this is clearly not the case.

The study showed that there is ‘no association of adult toy ownership with emotion regulation and immaturity’, so adults shouldn’t feel silly for hanging onto their childhood companions. Teddy bear ownership in adults reflects a normal, healthy and much cherished childhood, which is all positive!

Stories That Feature Real Life Toys

Everyone loves to receive a cuddly teddy bear, whether it’s to cheer you up, a way of saying thanks or in celebration of some achievement that you’ve made. The experience is shared by children and adults alike. But without any doubt, there’s something about the imagination of children that far exceeds that of adults. We all remember playing with teddy bears when we were little tackers and imagining with wonder the idea that they might secretly be alive when we’re not around. This notion has been explored in countless films, books and television programs, and we thought we’d count down some of our favourites.

Toy Story

This Pixar trilogy well and truly earns its spot on top of the list. Starring some classic characters including Buzz, Woody, Ham and Mr. Potato Head, Toy Story is the quintessential film that explores the secret world of toys, who cannot reveal their intelligent and conscious nature to humans. Throughout the trilogy, the gang goes through a lot including convincing Buzz that he is actually a toy (rather than a spaceman), saving Woody after he is stolen by a collector and dealing with the inevitable fact that their owner Andy will eventually outgrow them.

Nowadays, kid’s films are as much fun for adults as they are for the little ones, and the Toy Story movies have enough laughs to keep everyone in the family entertained. Not to be missed!

Small Soldiers

In these kinds of stories, the reason why or how the toys are alive is usually explained by magic, or not at all. And a lot of them depict the toys as living in a secret world that humans do not know about. In 1998’s Small Soldiers, a scientific explanation is provided, as the toys are installed with micro chips that enable them think and interact. Trouble brews are two different classes of toys have an all out war with improvised weapons, most of which are extremely dangerous to humans. An interesting take on the genre, Small Soldiers is fast paced, action packed and a lot of fun!

Winnie the Pooh

The classic series of books were published in 1926 and written by AA Milne, later being adapted for the big and small screens. The story follows the lives of the lovable toys of Christopher Robbin, a character that was based on the author himself. We are especially fond of Pooh because he is teddy bear, though we love the rest of the gang as well! Many Hollywood remakes have allowed the childhood memories of parents to live on with a new batch of stuffed toys and merchandising to give to the youngest generation.

Pinocchio

Everyone knows the story of Pinocchio, the wooden puppet that dreams of being a real boy and eventually has his wish granted. But this results in Pinocchio being exploited and taken advantage of, and there are the notion of ‘being careful what you wish for’ is cleverly portrayed. This hugely significant story - first conceived by Italian author Carlo Collodi in 1881 - has been reimagined and most people would remember Disney’s 1940 version. A true classic and a great story!

The History of Teddy Bears

Receiving the gift of a teddy bear for a birthday or another special occasion is something just about every child experiences, and playing with a little furry friend can be one of the most magical times for a young one. Children have always found comfort in having soft toys, but teddy bears in particular seem to be the oldest, most recognisable form. And they can even be given to adults as a cute way to say thank you or to show your love for a partner on Valentine’s Day.

But how exactly did our fascination with teddy bears come to be?

Origins

President Roosevelt with Teddy Bear
The creation of the Teddy bear came from a story of the American President Theodore Roosevelt whilst on a hunting trip in Mississippi in 1902. It was on this day that ‘Teddy’ Roosevelt showed a great deal of compassion for a captured black bear and the word soon got out in the papers, the president being the subject of many satirical cartoon and editorials.

Morris Michtom a Russian immigrant that was living in New York, noticed the public interest in Roosevelt’s affinity with bears and decided to manufacture a stuffed bear for his toyshop, after gaining the approval of the US President for the use of the name Teddy. After approval was given, it was put into production and the Teddy bear was ready to spark the imaginations of every child that came into contact with these cuddly creatures.

The toy proved to be very popular and sales skyrocketed. This led to Michtom create the Ideal Novelty and Toy Company, which remained successful until the 1980’s, when it was finally sold and the name changed. However, by this stage, the company had well and truly shaped the toy industry - and possibly even the retail industry - forever.

The modern interest

There are many reasons why the classic teddy bear is as popular today as it ever was. Seen as an iconic soft toy even today, the teddy bear is a great gift for any young child and is seen as a comforting friend and companion. Being soft and cuddly is all that is needed, and with quality craftsmanship from the best toymakers, a good teddy bear can be with you for a lifetime.

Whilst many children in this day and age like to play with electronic games, video games and other more technologically more advanced toys, the humble teddy bear always has its place in any home. What better gift to give than the gift of a cuddly, cute little friend?

When Morris Michtom first placed his child’s cuddly toy in the window of his toy shop, named Teddy after The U.S president Theodore Roosevelt, little did he know what an iconic celebration of childhood would follow his creation!
