The Significance of Mother’s Day and the Purpose of Gift Giving

The history of Mother’s Day dates back to many years before the tradition of gift giving that is now associated with the special day.

The Greeks are the first people reported to have celebrated something close to Mother’s Day; long ago, they celebrated maternal goddesses on festivals and yearly occasions.

The ancient Romans too, have a history of celebrating mother goddesses on spring festivals; they usually honoured mother figures like Cybele, and they danced and involved themselves in numerous activities that may not necessarily fit today’s description of Mother’s Day.

However, beyond the accounts of these early celebrations, the Mothering Sunday was the original source of what is now known as Mother’s Day. It was usually celebrated in the United Kingdom with gifts and flowers which are bought by children who desire to pay tribute and respect to their mothers. But later on, the tradition spread to other places like the U.S. through the determined works of Anna Jarvis.

Mother’s Day has become one of the most widely honoured days in the world; it has become a perfect opportunity to shower mothers and motherly figures with exotic Mother’s Day gifts just as the little children did in the days of Mothering Sunday earlier celebrated in the United Kingdom.

Mother’s Day gifts are usually meant to express love and appreciation for all the gifts that mothers have spent their lives giving to their own children.

The significance of Mother’s Day can aptly be seen in the volume of special and customized Mother’s Day gifts sold in shops and stores across the world, anytime that special day is approaching.
